About
Who We Are
ButchFemmeTrans Melbourne is a group based in Melbourne, Australia. We organise activities – mostly social events – that bring together, inform and excite people who have a connection to butch/femme/trans identities.
Our events include dinners, a monthly evening drinks event, parties and more. For more information about attending our events, please check out the Frequently Asked Questions section.
What We’re About
We organise all of our activities with these values in mind:
- Inclusion: We welcome anyone with a connection to butch/femme/trans identities.
- Accessibility: We try and make as many of our events free or low cost as possible. Regarding other accessibility issues, if you contact us in advance, we will do our utmost to accommodate you.
- Respect: We respect all expressions of sexuality and gender identity.
- Safety: We aim to provide safe spaces for people who have a connection to and respect for butch/femme/trans identities.
Our History
ButchFemmeTrans Melbourne began in mid-2006 when a few people from the Butch-Femme-Australia email list decided to organise some events in Melbourne for people with a connection to butch/femme/trans identities. At the time, there were no events in Melbourne that existed for this purpose.
Our very first event was held on 6 August 2006. We organised a lunch at a cafe/bar and had a great crowd of people show up. Since this time, our organising group has expanded and we’ve presented a range of social events. Right from the beginning, our events have attracted people from a wide range of sexualities and genders.
The history of ButchFemmeTrans Melbourne also comes out of a broader context that extends much further back than our group. Butch and femme identities – and their overlap with identities under the trans* umbrella – are age-old in the queer community.
